Abstract
There is an increasing awareness of the need for certification of experts in many scientific fields. Given the potential risks, this is particularly relevant in radiation protection, as the general public would find it difficult to identify a suitably qualified expert. This article describes the establishment of the Australasian Radiation Protection Accreditation Board (ARPAB) more than 20 years ago and explores the rationale for recently introducing a second, higher-level competency certification.
