Abstract
This chapter considers the relevance and importance of spirituality in palliative care for speech-language pathologists (SLP), their clients and their families. Noting the early background literature and progressive history of SLP engagement with spirituality, this chapter will first outline definitions and theories relating to spirituality and religiosity and then subsequently consider the praxis of spiritual care, as well as religious and pastoral care. Second, while there exist numerous models of care, a biopsychosocial–spiritual paradigm (BPSS) will form the main frame of reference for this chapter and will note the various spiritual and religious (S/R) intervention codings categorised within the WHO–ICD, the SNOMED–CT, as well as the WHO–ICF. Third, the authors propose an SCP “Spiritual Care Pathway” to guide SLP clinical decision-making. Given the potential complexities concerning spiritual, religious and pastoral care interventions, this chapter acknowledges the important and practical collaboration of SLPs working with chaplains or other spiritual carers to ensure the holistic care of clients and their families.
