Abstract
Radial probe endobronchial ultrasound (RP-EBUS) has redefined the role of the pulmonologist in the workup of peripheral pulmonary lesions. Its safety and high diagnostic accuracy has been long established, and consequently, the procedure is recommended for investigation of suspected malignant and benign peripheral lung lesions. Diagnostic performance varies considerably, based on both clinico-radiologic factors and institutional factors, which include optimal technical performance. Technical factors, including optimal set-up, bronchoscopic navigation, probe positioning (including image interpretation), and sample acquisition and processing are critical to optimal performance of RP-EBUS. These steps are reviewed in this chapter.
