Abstract
Non-Hodgkin lymphoma (NHL) refers to a diverse group of malignancies derived from lymphoid tissue consisting of more than 50 different clinicopathological entities. As a group, they account for 3–4% of all cancers worldwide with the highest incidence seen in economically developed countries. From a global burden of disease study, the overall incidence of NHL has remained relatively stable since 1990, however the mortality from NHL has decreased significantly (particularly in economically developed countries) leading to an overall increase in the prevalence of NHL worldwide. All subtypes of NHL are more common in the elderly, making this an increasing public healthcare problem in an ageing population. NHL also has an uneven sex distribution with almost all subtypes occurring more frequently in men.
