Abstract
The degree of sun exposure to the head and neck region makes it one of the most common sites for skin cancers, in particular basal cell carcinoma (BCC), squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) and melanoma [1, 2]. It accounts for approximately 40% of BCCs and 33% of SCCs [1] and melanoma [2]. In our experience, the majority of patients will seek attention for their skin cancer when they are relatively small. Local flap reconstruction of the head and neck region is ideally suited for these lesions due to the rich vascularity of the region. They also have the advantage of optimal aesthetic outcomes due to the match in colour, texture and contour of the face, which is often different from tissue taken from other areas of the body whether in the form of grafts or regional or distant flaps.
