- Abstract
- Cancers of the genitourinary system account for a large proportion of all cancers globally, with more than 2.1 million new diagnoses worldwide in 2013. Of these cases, the majority are diagnosed in individuals aged 60 years or older. Successful outcomes in urological cancer surgery rely on meticulous planning and preemptive identification of patient needs, for which early management plans are established and complications avoided. In this chapter, we aim to address some of the common perioperative issues encountered in the patient undergoing genitourinary oncological surgery. We also discuss new and evolving concepts in perioperative care in urological cancer surgery. Topical areas include venous thromboprophylaxis selection, reducing opioid use, and creating urological procedure-specific ERAS guidelines.
